Our Story
Our journey began in 2013 with the opening of our first cafe. The corner storefront overlooked the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Midwood Street & became the heart of the vibrant & diverse neighbourhood of Prospect Leffert’s Gardens in Brooklyn, NY. Gratitude Café, which later became PLG Coffee House, was a spur of the moment decision that took us down an untrodden path. While the cafe served artisan baked goods, original sandwiches & bespoke coffee, it provided something much more nourishing; an open space for a community to break bread, meet each other and share time together. It wasn’t like other cafe’s…it was different, a hub of peace, love and generosity, and people traveled to experience the food and atmosphere.
We loved it. The community loved it. But it was hard running a business & raising a young family in Brooklyn. After 4 years of non-stop work and sacrifice to grow the cafe, we began to feel the pull back home to Cork. We decided it was time for a new chapter. In 2017, much to the dismay of our friends and neighbours, we sold the café, & moved our family across the Atlantic.
In 2018, we opened BeanTown Café on the outskirts of Cork City. The sun-filled corner on the Model Farm Road was reminiscent of our original spot, and the neighbourhood was surprisingly just as diverse. The cafe is sandwiched between universities, schools, hospitals, businesses and homes. It wasn’t long before the community hub was recreated a continent away.
Our goal was to recreate the welcoming atmosphere we had built in Brooklyn— a place where our community could enjoy great food and drink, and spend time together. Since then, BeanTown has grown to three locations, each carrying forward that same spirit of warmth and connection.
Making people happy with our food and service is what we love most, and we don’t do it alone. Beantown’s most valuable asset has always been the energy our team creates — they’re the heart of everything we do, and we have built a workplace that’s, creative, positive and fulfilling, and that spills over to our community.
By building real relationships with our customers, we’ve created inviting, community-focused spaces in all three of our locations, where good food and meaningful connections come together.
